Back Pain Statistics

According to the South African Association of Physiotherapy press release in February  2013, back pain costs South Africa R2 billion every year.  The following statistics indicate a growing concern for something we all take for granted.

Prevalence

80% of the population will experience back pain at some time during their life-span.

Recovery

60% of non-specific back pain is resolved through lifestyle interventions.

Intervention

25 – 40% of people with back pain seek healthcare and rehabilitation.

Recurrence

60 – 75% of back pain sufferers have recurrences.

Absence

10 – 15% of all sick days are taken due to lower back pain In Europe.

Travel

60% of people complain about back problems after a long car journey.

Economic

Back pain costs worldwide economies more than any other disease.

Disability

Low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide.
